Martyn Knight - Consultant
After a formal agricultural education at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester Martyn joined the family farming business and became a partner and joint tenant with his father of the family farm in the Eastern Counties at twenty two years old. This progressed to a three farm, thousand acre partnership, for about the following twenty years. For the subsequent fifteen years Martyn farmed on his own, increasing the business to six tenanted farms covering two thousand five hundred acres, of which two thousand acres were in arable crops and five hundred acres in grassland, carrying an eight hundred ewe flock and a small Aberdeen Angus suckler herd.
With his family of four taking up different occupations, Martyn came out of his farming business and started his own farm consultancy in the late nineties. His first big break in advice work was delivering the Defra funded Farm Business Advice Service after the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2002 for the Business Links in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Devon and Cumbria Farm Link, where in all he did nearly two hundred business reports.
Since then he has continued with his own consultancy before merging his business with Harvey Hughes in two thousand and twelve, realising the need for a more diverse advice service where farmers, landowners and rural businesses require much more integrated support in today’s competitive business environment and often seek specialist advice from one contact point.
